Squats, Deadlifts, and Lunges -Focused on Legs for Summer
“Don’t be too aggressive”. That’s what my physical therapist said to me at my last appointment. Two epidurals, an investment in a home cervical traction device, countless physical therapy appointments and five months later my herniated discs are still not healed. But the good news is they still have great potential to heal without going under the knife, though it is a a slow process, it’s moving forward.
Initially, I didn’t think my therapist fully appreciated my impatience (commitment) to heal as quickly as possible. But, as I returned every time he told me to, followed his direction completely and spoke of my goals, he came around. The first time I told him I needed to do a back bend, he asked me “why?” and I looked at him like he was crazy and simply answered, “because it’s on my to do list and it’s part of my hand stand dismount”. That’s when he sent me for the second epidural 😉 Not to mention that it is my god given right! Nod to Rocky:
I have been cleared to work out (truth be told, I never stopped), just not aggressively. I think aggressive is a relative term and use that to my advantage. I am pretty sure my husband would ship me off to no man’s land if I had to stop all together. I don’t idle well and it shows quickly but, I digress. When I was diagnosed in February, I turned my exercise focus to the lower body and vowed to have ripped legs come summer. Well, I was doubting myself recently trying a see the evidence of the gazillion squats, deadlifts and lunges I have done the past few months. I am most positively my own worst critic but also aware that “ripped” can also be a very relative term and I embrace that.
This will never be me and I’m fine with that!
I have always thought my husband has nice legs and would joke about wanting to trade him, I mean, I have to shave anyway, right?
Funny enough though, I’m not sure he has received half the amount of unsolicited comments about his legs that I have. It is the beginning of shorts season and over the past few days, I’ve had 3 complete strangers approach me just to tell me how great my legs look and I was pleased my husband was there to witness it. Not trying to gloat or anything because nobody likes a show off 😉
The first official day of summer is June 21, 2017 and I’m fully prepared to unveil my ripped legs!
